Earlier this month, Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane in Pennsylvania, warned consumers to be cautious of lottery and sweepstakes scams. Recently, the attorney general’s office has received several complaints from consumers regarding lottery and sweepstakes scams. In one popular scam, victims are asked to pay money in order to receive a prize they have supposedly won. In another scam, the fraudsters will tell consumers to send a check for fees included in the sweepstakes. They will also send checks to consumers that are sometimes fraudulent or bounce and leave consumers with the fees related to the checks. Some tips from the attorney general’s office:
Never give out personal information such as bank account, address, phone number or social security number to strangers
Be suspicious of anyone stating that you have won something, especially if you did not enter a contest
It is against the law to buy foreign lottery tickets by phone or mail
Legitimate lotteries will not require you to pay money before claiming a prize
If you are a victim, file a detailed report with your local police department or the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
